Chemical engineer and environmental activist Sven Thesen points out the various components of the heat pump. Thesen’s home is one of few in Palo Alto that has net zero energy efficiency. “To retrofit is always harder than to build new at the time of construction,” Thesen said. “[Still,] it’s a lot easier than it was a couple years ago.”
