Anthro staff welcomed back Katie Causey, former Palo Alto High School student, who visited Monday to speak about her role in the community as an organizer and volunteer and her experience as a founding editor of [Proof] — the photography and arts magazine, the oldest of the Incubator publications.
Causey’s first experience as an organizer was as a founding member of [Proof], which is publishing 3 times a year. Since then, Causey has become a Human Relations Commissioner for the City of Palo Alto and is a community organizer for the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition.
Her work as HR Commissioner involves handling policies on equity to discuss and vote on decisions to be presented to Palo Alto City Council. Causey also volunteers for the League of Women Voters as Chair of Gun Violence Prevention and the Palo Alto Renter’s Association.
Now more in tune with activism for her community, Causey said that to advocate is to give power to those without a voice, and to organize is to gather people with similar interests and create change.
“Organizing people is to have people recognize the power that they do have,” Causey said.
Anthro thanks Katie Causey for visiting and for the work that she does to better our community.
