“I think that the ethnic studies will widen students’ knowledge about different cultures and ethnicities, and raise awareness of societal unbalance as well as the importance of equality and inclusion.”
—Kate Vo, freshman
“I think the positive aspect is that students will have a greater lens on the people around them and different ethnic groups and their culture and historical background, as well as a better understanding of how differences between ethnic groups have created problems in the world for many years and how we can move forward to change and grow beyond those problems and understand how our ethnic makeup is not the only thing that defines us.”
—Leilani Chen, freshman
“I think there will be positive results for this ethnic studies course being added. I think maybe if some students can gain you were saying about others backgrounds where they came from. It’ll help them further understand their peers.”
—Rowan Gustavson, sophomore
“I believe ethnic studies will have a big impact on our community once it’s implemented. I think it will bring a bigger awareness for those minority groups and what they go through. I mean everyone is still aware, but the discrimination against racial minorities is still present, it’s not gone totally. So I feel like ethnic studies will very much have a good effect on the community, it will bring a lot of awareness to certain racial minorities that we do not know a lot about and all of the different cultures and activities and understand their culture differences.”
—Samhita Swaminathan, sophomore
“I think, in like a lot of different controversies and things that happened like currently in society thinks a good topic for people learn more about, but […] I don’t know how well taught it will be. But I think it’s a good thing for people to learn about.”
—Eric Sun, senior
“Because I feel like Americans are generally uneducated on this particular topic. […] Because there’s a lot of I think, ethnic complications in the country. There’s like such a huge amount of people that an additional class would definitely be a it would definitely help out I think in social awareness. For like people in general, I think there’s is there is already like an emphasis on ethnic studies in history already so I think making it a required class would be weird.”
—Gautam Pilapakam, senior
