Who: This event may be called a women’s march, but the organizers have made it clear that it is open to “all men, women, and children who stand for human rights, civil liberties, tolerance of diversity, and compassion for our shared humanity.” Any individual who is interested in participating in spreading these values to our local community is more than welcome to join!
What & Why: It should be noted that the goal of the march is not to protest the inauguration of Trump. According to the organizers, the march is a “celebration of human rights” with the goal of both unifying the country and empower those who stand for human rights and social justice. There will be a rally with speakers, arts, and music, which will lead to a candlelight march across the city. This march is in unison with the various “sister marches” occurring both locally and across the country – there will be similar events in San Jose, Oakland, Washington D.C., and in each state.
The goal of the march is to “support and inspire each other and the nation to celebrate, honor, and protect our diversity, freedom and human rights,” and to “gather in community to find healing and strength through tolerance, civility, and compassion.” The organizers have also made it clear that this is a non-partisan march.
When: The San Francisco Women’s March will be on Saturday, January 21st. The rally will be from 3 to 5 p.m., and the march will then be from 5 to 8 p.m.
The Oakland and San Jose events will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: The rally and the starting point of the march will be held at the San Francisco Civic Center, and the march will end at Justin Herman Plaza. The Oakland event will start at Madison Park, with the march beginning at 11 a.m., and end at Frank Ogawa Plaza at 12:30 p.m., where the rally will begin. The San Jose event will begin at San Jose City Hall, with the march starting at 11 a.m., and will end at Cesar Chavez Plaza at 12 p.m., where the rally will begin.
