On Sept. 23, Governor Gavin Newsom passed the Phone-Free School Act, requiring California school districts to devise policies to restrict phone usage in schools by July 1, 2026. California school districts like Los Angeles Unified have voted to ban smartphone and social media use during the school day, the law going into effect in 2025. Anthro interviewed Palo Alto High School Principal Brent Kline and Palo Alto Unified School District Superintendent Don Austin on how the Act would impact Palo Alto, and specifically Paly.
